I'm like 99% sure they did this because of GOT. And I don't really care, because all I wanted was for him to look good, and he does. But I can understand your grievance, OP.

why? are the ones in GOT the same or different?

Oh, they're the same sort of dragon, with the wings attached to the arms (I didn't remember it was called a wyvern, oops). I think probably what happened was, PJ and co. were...influenced in their design of Smaug, let's say, by the studio, because obviously those types of dragons are In. Of course, I have no proof of this, it's just a theory.

I think they were both influenced by Skyrim's design, personally.

Oh, that could be true! I haven't played Skyrim (not much for video games) so I didn't make that connection, but that would make sense too.
