I think my granddad would actually have been ok with my grandmommy working because he's always been really laid-back and forward-thinking. I also have heard comments from family members implying that she sort of "wore the pants" not in an absolute way but just in the sense that she had a more outwardly intense personality and he was ok with going along with what she wanted a lot of the time. Their relationship was very harmonious, as far as I've ever been able to tell, and they were just short of being married for 50 years before she died.
I think her not working had a lot more to do with societal expectations (such as, pregnant women were not to be seen in professional environments) than with my granddad. Also, she genuinely really liked being a homemaker, so that probably helped a lot.
