The Lord of the Rings was written by Tolkien as a single stand alone book. His publisher broke it up into three books as they didn't believe the public would buy such a large book.

One of my best buys from the Science Fiction Book Club was the leather bound, gilt edged, printed on acid free parchment paper edition of LOTR as it was meant to be printed, a single book! I love it and it is the pride of my library. Heh, it even has a built in silk ribbon book mark. :^)
