IA. I need to like the characters in order to like the show and most 'quality' dramas lately don't have that.

And as someone else said: why are all these shows so bleak? I get that the good guys don't always win, love doesn't conquer all, etc. But some hope or friendship that isn't immediately undercut would be nice. Especially since people often claim these shows are somehow more realistic than previous eras of television. Sure, maybe a lot of tv was too positive compared to real life before, right now it's skewing the other way.

I honestly don't understand how people can only watch shows like that and not be completely depressed. But I guess I do take my tv pretty seriously.

IMO, it's harder to get invested in TV shows that are overwhelmingly positive. When there's evil and disaster lurking, or when anyone can die at any moment, then you're sort of continuously compelled to keep watching.

Plus, it's also a form of escapism, you know? My life isn't sunshine and rainbows, but it's generally okay. Watching characters getting into swordfights or being hunted by the cops provides a kind of excitement that I don't normally get, and I can enjoy those kinds of thrills without worrying about any effects on my life.

Well yeah, I get that, but there's a difference between these shows and say, Agents of SHIELD where they're the underdogs and people get killed and things are tough but there's still a sense of team and purpose. Or Doctor Who which has a lot of deaths and heavy themes for a family show, but still maintains a sense of hope and wonder.

I get what you mean and I remember shows from when I was younger where nothing bad ever happened if the character was in the main credits. Where every issue was neatly and happily resolved within one episode. Obviously current shows are more realistic and better in that sense.

I don't know, maybe it's not just about what happens in the show, but the way it views life. Most of the shows in the secret are pretty cynical, assume the worst in people, and rarely if ever show any of the good. I don't like seeing a world where everyone and everything is awful.

It's funny that you mention escapism because that's why I watch 'happy'/(more) positive shows. While my life could be worse, it has often been pretty bad and then a fun show can take your mind off of it.
