Re: Weird things you judge people for?

I don't judge them for it but I do get a little sad when people say they don't watch anything that's black and white because there are so many of those movies that I love. Same for people who think animation is all kids stuff and people whose only reaction to anything past a certain threshold of weirdness is "trippy! what kind of drugs were the creators on?" Those three categories make up most of my favorite movies and sometimes I have a hard time finding people to talk to about them.

I don't watch much old stuff (and been meaning to fix that), but weird and animated happen to be in some of my favorite things. Would you happen to have some reccomendations? I definitely wouldn't mind talking about it either some.

I was replying before and then lost my comment :( Anyway

I always have to mention The Triplets of Belleville when this subject comes up. I love the highly stylized character designs. It's also a bit weird, at least according to my mom who walked in when I was halfway through it once. For more French animations, ff you haven't seen Fantastic Planet it should definitely be on your list. The same director did Time Masters and Gandahar.

Felidae looks a bit like a typical talking animal animated film at first but it's definitely not for kids. It's a pretty cool crime movie but with cats.

I recently watched Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart and loved it. I just love that style of story-telling where strange things happen and you're just expected to go with it. No explanations needed. A boy was born with a frozen heart and he was saved by sticking a clock in there, sure why not.

If you're like most people you probably already know of and didn't like The Corpse Bride but I love it.

Jan Švankmajer is known for some very strange things. I think his version of Alice in Wonderland is the most well-known but personally I prefer his shorts. I'd also recommend the Brothers Quay who were inspired by him. I really like The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes. In mentioning them, I have to mention Terry Gilliam too. I haven't seen as much of his work as I'd like though.

More well-known, I love Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. And speaking of dreams, there's also The City of Lost Children and I also like Paprika. I need to watch more Satoshi Kon. I wish Makoto Shinkai was more well-known too, not that he's that obscure. I was introduced to him through The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Voices of a Distant Star.

If you're interested in philosophy you might like Waking Life. It's basically a series of animated shorts showing a bunch of different conversations about philosophy.

For particularly interesting animation styles, there's The Secret of Kells, Bill Plympton's work, and Renaissance.

I was going to say that it's too bad you didn't ask me a week or so from now since I have a bunch of other movies in these categories that I just tracked down that I plan on watching soon, but that's probably more than enough for now.

I could tell you my favorite Disney, Pixar, Miyazaki, and Dreamworks movies too, but I figured you've probably already heard enough about them.

Argh, that's the worst.

I'm a little weak on my French animation knowledge so most of those titles don't register, but Triplets of Belleview sounds exactly like my sort of thing and trailer looks great, so I'll try checking it out soon. I'm not entirely hopeless though as I do like checking out the student films on gobelins' youtube account and really enjoyed Ernest and Celestine.

I haven't heard of Felidae, but a lot of my favorite stuff ends up featuring cats in someway so I'll take that as a sign of its goodness.

It's been a long while since I last saw a Corpse Bride so I'm a little foggy on the details, but I remember liking it some. I've definitely liked Mike Johnson's other films too, especially James and the Giant Peach. I'm glad some other major companies are still making good claymation too.

Ohh, haven't of any of them, but after looking them up their stuff looks really experimental and really great. Definitely adding that to my to watchlist.

Yeah, I'm really partial to Satoshi Kon's films, especially Tokyo Godfathers. His exploration of dreams and use of transitions not possible in live action are really compelling. Such a shame he passed away. Makoto Shinkai's stuff is beyond gorgeous, but unfortunately I find his films a little lacking otherwise. I did really enjoy his short film, She and Her Cat, however. Crossroads too, but I feel a little silly mentioning a commericial.

I can't sing the praises of Secret of Kells art direction enough. I cannot wait for Song of the Sea either. I've seen a little bit of Bill Plympton's work and while I like his art style, his brand of whimsiness is not mine. Renaissance looks pretty interesting though!

You'll have to report back on those! I'd give you some stuff too, but I'm sure you already have a lot to finish.

And while haven't been feeling those studios as much lately (with the exception of Ghilbi's absolutely stunning The Tale of the Princess Kaguya), they're well know for a reason, so I don't mind. My favorite films from those studios are probably Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, Wall-E, and Only Yesterday.

I feel a bit bad not knowing a fair bit of stuff you mentioned, but pretty much all of it looks interesting so looks like I have a lot to look forward to. Plus the most stuff I do recognize, I loved, so I'm sure I'll end up liking most of it. (Also everything I skipped making a comment on looks great, but I didn't have anything more to add than "looks great, will watch.") Thanks for taking out the time to write a big ol' rec list like that.

DID SOMEONE SAY WEIRD ANIMATION? 8D?

Satoshi Kon's Paprika is a trip and a half AND I LOVE IT. Satoshi Kon is generally great; I have also seen and loved Tokyo Godfathers. Perfect Blue is good, but rough; I would not advise watching it if you're feeling down or fragile.

There's also the classic Minnie The Moocher, with Betty Boop. I haven't seen it myself yet, but I think it's public domain so on archive.org now?

Also, sounds random, but the trailers for the American McGee's Alice games. You can find them on Youtube. A lot of them are really beautiful/strange little animation shorts and I enjoy watching them in their own right. Here's one.
