They were, but let's not pretend that "European evil" is some special brand of evil. It's not. Everyone all over the world was equally as shitty to one another throughout history.

Europeans just had a confluence of factors work out that they had technology (and germs) that gave them an advantage.

I would argue that the systems were more insidious and harmful largely due to the technology. I agree that Europeans are not particularly more evil than any other group of human beings.

But, I mean, there are a hell of a lot of people who do use "pre-colonial native peoples were violent" as a justification for colonialism.

People who use that justification are just racists though. When it comes to things like this, though, the history of the world has always been "might makes right" -- it's not fair, but when you've got the power, you shape society and decide how history is written.

I just think that people who act like Europeans are specifically or innately more evil aren't thinking things through at all.

Because if that's the case, then, well, it's not their fault and they have no reason to stop. And if they're inherently oppressors, POC are inherently oppressed.

And I find that insulting for everyone involved, to be perfectly honest.

And Capitalism. European colonialism started off as an economic venture and step-by-step became more and more political as the Europeans found that they needed to control and stabilise the native regimes and defend their interests against other Europeans in order to keep trading.
