It's weird. I've never seen the Earthsea adaptation(s?), I've just heard they sucked balls as badly as the The Dark is Rising adaptation. But I never got the impression from the Earthsea books that the school on Roke would look anything like Hogwarts, and in a way that pisses me off almost as much as the whitewashing. Ged is black, and he's also got almost nothing in common with Harry aside from magic, in the same way that Earthsea and J.K. Rowling's wizarding world have almost nothing in common. Earthsea is not a cheap HP ripoff.

My mother bought the DVD of the SyFy miniseries for me for Christmas, knowing what a huge fan I am of the books.

It was... it was pretty bad. Ursula LeGuin herself actually wrote a letter/article condemning the producers/writers for their whitewashing. And it has a ton of other problems, too.
