Things you can't watch because of second hand embarrassment

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else get second hand embarrassment easily, and have trouble watching things because of it? I have so much trouble watching celebrities doing interviews, especially celebrities I like. :/ I also can't watch "awkward" comedy shows, like Parks and Rec. It just makes me cringe.

I never thought that show was funny.

I do get that quite a bit. Although for different things than you - celebrity interviews don't bother me unless there's something particular going on in the interview.

Also, I feel like it's getting a little one-note for me to say this, but Parks and Rec really isn't an awkward cringe comedy show after the first season. Definitely not by the third season. It's wacky but it's not awkward by that point. There are awkward comedies I can't watch (Curb Your Enthusiasm etc) but I have no problem with Parks and Rec.

"Awkward" comedy shows/movies that only build up their jokes on the humiliation of their characters are the worst.

I also can't watch any sort of cosplay competition.

And even though I think that, music-wise, the Shingeki no Kyojin openings are really great, I can't listen to them because of the weird German-ish text.

If there is an actor I really like, I can't watch them in shitty movies. I get way to embarrassed for them (see Michael Fassbender in Jonah Hex, Sebastian Stan in most things, Chris Evans in Not Another Teenage Movie).

Oh my god, I am totally the same.

YES to Michael Fassbender in Jonah Hex (I couldn't believe my eyes or ears. I was terribly ashamed. And I'm not even him!)

YES to Chris Evans (that movie you pointed out was the reason I did not like him for the longest time and still feel a slight awkwardness when I see him in other roles. I always just think of that movie and his character and his annoying face at the time. :[)

Mostly sitcoms. Sometimes, scenes in movies/tv shows, where I know someone is going to do something embarrassing, I either leave the room or ffwd through it. (Can't think of a single example atm, of course).

I find that, for some reason, muting it and just reading the subtitles helps a lot. It just feels... less immediate.

Most competitive reality shows. It's like the judges are disappointed in me, and I didn't even do anything! Actually most reality TV shows, now that I think about them. I can't do hoarders or extreme couponers or biggest losers - there's probably an element of being "too real" in there somewhere since I can handle the Kardashians and "Say Yes to the Dress," which are kind of escapist fantasies.

I've been on youtube a lot today and there's this one gilette ad that I think is supposed to be inspiring for women or something but I can't watch it. I have to mute and look away. A lot of those 'inspirational' messages make me cringe and it's embarrassment, but I'm not sure what for, exactly.

I hate those ads. Trying to sell your product as if you're saving the world.

I very much enjoyed this video from Deadspin regarding a recent McDonald's ad:

Yeah, I think it's just the cloying insincerity that really gets me.
I lost it at the "God is punishing us for gay marriage" one, though. Much improved upon the original.

A lot of fanfiction, fanart, and manips (and even gif sets) will give me cringe-inducing second hand embarrassment, especially if they're cheesy or sappy. I wish it wasn't the case, because it sometimes makes fandom feel less fun for me.

I get a lot of second hand embarrassment for practically everyone involved in red carpet walks at awards shows. Interviewers asked either the most vapid questions imaginable, especially about fashion, or they ask ridiculously personal questions that the celebrities aren't going to truly answer in a million years. All the way trying to maintain a sense of familiarity and friendship with said celebrity. I'm embarrassed for the interviewer, especially when they're shot down, and I'm embarrassed for the celebrity, who has to project an amount of interest and politeness towards the interviewer. And this is all played out on a national level.

To a lesser extent, acceptance speeches are embarrassing to me, especially when the winner gets shut down by the music starting up.

I can't watch actors/singers read fanfiction (it weirds me out and I know I would feel horribly embarrassed if I was the writer of the fic--oddly enough, if I was a famous actress, I'd be reading fic of my characters ALL THE TIME. And probably writing my own, tbh).

I also have second hand embarrassment for overt advances by fans and fans just...eh. I don't know. The ones that are overwhelmingly MARRY ME LET'S HAVE BABIES hgvdlndlnfvglfj they make me feel horribly awkward and embarrassed for all parties involved, including the witnesses.
