Hey, whatever helps you feel better. If this gives you something to be happy about and look forward to, then I definitely think you should keep doing it. And everyone loves receiving presents! Glad it helped.

Never underestimate the power of having something to look forward to. Keep seeking out those opportunities, OP!

Text: For years, I’ve been struggling with depression. I wasn’t diagnosed until recently, and nothing I’ve tried since then made me feel better. But I participated in Yuletide for the past year, and it actually imbued me with feelings of purpose and enjoyment. The sense of community, the sheer excitement, the effort it took to write something, the gratitude my recipient displayed, and the thriss of reading the gifts I received prevented me from wanting to end it all

So I think I’ll participate in future fic challenges and festivals. (And I get touchy whenever anyone says that fic challenges are about “entitlement” or dismisses them as pointless.)

I'm so glad you found something to give you that sense of purpose and satisfaction, OP. ♥ I hope things only get better from here.

I've struggled with depression a long time as well, OP, and I share your feelings on fic exchanges. Sometimes when you're really down, and when you've been down for a long time, it feels good to accomplish something-- and to be able to do it for someone. There are times when I can't motivate myself at all to work on my own things for me, but knowing that I'm writing for one concrete other person who is looking forward to getting a gift can pull me out of it because... hell, maybe I'll never make myself happy, but if I can make someone else happy, then there's a point to it all.

I'm really glad that you found that, and I hope you keep enjoying fic exchanges and challenges for a long time to come-- and that your fandom(s) put out plenty of them to get involved in.

Managing depression is all about finding achievable goals that aren't overwhelming and having things to look forward to.

While you're waiting for another fic exchange you could perhaps try an anon kink meme. I find them even better, because there's less pressure to finish my fics in a certain time period, or to have them perfect, but there's still the satisfaction of making someone else happy from the fics I've done. There's also the chance of getting fics, and a feeling of community from everyone discussing the prompts.

If you're looking for other fic exchanges throughout the year try [community profile] fandomcalendar and [community profile] fandom_on_dw. If you like original slash, how about writing for [livejournal.com profile] bb_shousetsu which publishes themed issues 10 times a year? [community profile] nightonficmountain is like Yuletide but in summer. Signup is in April.

Your secret was lovely. <3

I'm not the secret maker, but I want to thank you so much for a piece of fantastic, practical-sounding advice that I want to put to use as soon as possible.

I was feeling overwhelmed and terrible, and this post of yours made my day.

Hey, if it works, it works! I've developed a small-fish art business because it helps me deal with my stuff, and it's awesome.
