I'm reading a bunch of short single-subject food history books. I recently finished Soup and am now reading Caviar.

I can honestly say that I've never thought about the history of food before. How detailed is it? Is it long?

Well in general, it's a whole discipline of history to itself. The series I'm reading in are all short (90-150pp), pithy histories that are very tightly focused on one product/type of food. This is the full series at the publisher; available in the US through Chicago University Press.

I got introduced to them in 2012 because a family friend is a culinary historian, and he wrote the volume in the series on Rum. We picked up Sandwich not long after, and recently Chicago UP had a sale in their catalog so my dad bought all the ones there that we didn't have for $5 each. I've now read Rum, Sandwich, Milk, and Soup, am reading Caviar and have Herbs, Spices, Dates, and Apple to go.
