The thing I most want to say to my sophomore English teacher is "you broke me." The freshman teacher started the job, but when I entered sophomore English, I still loved reading a variety of genres. After sophomore English, it took me years to start voluntarily reading realistic fiction again. I might also mention how his gender-essentialist talk of "the way men are" and "the way women are" kinda messed me up on the way to figuring out I was queer.

What put you off realistic fiction? The choices of the books or the way they were analyzed?

And gender-essentialism is just bullshit. I hope some day we reach a point where teachers don't assume that everyone in their class is cis and straight.

Both, really. I was having to deal with crap like "use of phallic symbols to represent power in A Prayer for Owen Meany." (I successfully argued that when a grenade blows Owen's arms off, he's split into a holy trinity of penises. It might not be my finest schoolwork ever, but it was definitely my finest bullshit.)

As for gender essentialism, I probably should have expected trouble when he thought The Taming of the Shrew was a good topic with which to discuss the differences between men and women. Holy crap.

This is the best thing I've read this week. :D

I'm sorry your teacher was like that, but it's also pretty practical to have a "mention this thing and get instant agreement" shortcut.
