Psoriasis

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-01-14 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
So, I am 99% sure I have psoriasis on my face. It has gone from itchy/annoying to painful. I am currently trying to find a dermatologist in-network (and when I do, I doubt they will have openings anytime soon).

Does anyone have any tips for alleviating the pain? Most of the tips are not helpful because I can't submerge my face in water and epsom salt (not without a snorkel at least). I was using shampoo with coal tar and that was helping. But my sister's doctor told her not to use that (I think I am just going to ignore that advice until I can get to a doctor).

Would Urgent Care would be able to prescribe something to help?

Psoriasis is caused by inflammation, so can be a reaction you're having to your environment, food, or stress. I've heard Omega-3 supplements can help, and you might also try eating clean (avoid processed foods/refined carbs and sugar). Also is there anything you can do to reduce stress in your life?

Eh. I eat fairly clean. I am getting back on my depression/anxiety meds in a week or so. That should help.

My friend uses aloe. If you have access to a plant that's best, but the aloe vera they sell in stores works for her, too.

Yep, they likely would. Some formulation of cortisol ointment is likely going to be what you'll receive as an initial treatment and often urgent care clinics actually have free product samples to give you until you get your prescription filled.

If it doesn't respond to the ointment, then you'll likely have to see your doctor.

I am going to call a local dermatologist and see when the soonest I can get an appointment for. There is a local-ish one who accepts my insurance.

I use sebitar (so coal tar) and it's been a godsend. I find shampoo and conditioner with aloe Vera equally soothing but if I go more than a week without sebitar it flares up again (and it takes like a week of serious sebitarring to bring it back down)

Ps pawpaw works great too

Mine isn't really bad and seems to be really tied to my allergies and/or cold and flu, in that it will get worse when I'm sick, so sometimes treating that helps. Hot water can really irritate it, for me. Some medications can make it worse, so be careful with that.

Do try to get to a determatologist, who can diagnose it for sure, but another thing to consider is fungus. My mom had red dry patches on her face, and was using cortisol and other things, but basically any sort of moisturizer feeds the fungus and provides a moist environment for it. You might search on that and see if it matches your symptoms.

SA
My mom thought it was some other skin condition, too, until the dermatologist told her otherwise.
