It'll be worse than that. Recall that in Red Dragon, Dolarhyde is easily the woobiest killer Harris has ever written. He befriends a blind lady and takes her to a zoo where she can pet a tiger and then battles against his evil side because he doesn't want to kill her! PLUS he was grotesquely abused as a child, a very popular fandom excuse for crushing on evil characters.

We won't be seeing awkward secrets. We'll be seeing angry defenses of HOW DARE YOU SAY FRANCIS DOLARHYDE IS ANYTHING OTHER THAN A SWEET WOUNDED CUPCAKE.

God dammit, you're right. It'll be people awkwardly confessing their crushes on a morally disturbing character and trying to justify that in the most convoluted ways possible.

...Actually, this should be pretty good. I'm gonna stock up on popcorn.

I just thought of something else, too. Remember in the book how they release to the media that they think the Tooth Fairy is probably gay, because they know that'll make him angrier? That'll become "Francis is being victimized by homophobia, therefore he's the real victim here."

lmao, I can definitely see this happening. Fortunately, I already avoid the Hannibal fandom to begin with

Eh, the writers have been pretty good about steering around some things like that. I wouldn't be surprised if 'the officials' didn't do it in that way to make him mad, since they said there wouldn't be any rape on the show, so you know Dolarhyde's victims won't have been raped.

The writers are good about it, but the fandom has it's awful moments of jumping the gun. When it was painfully obvious Freddie's death was faked, a louder portion of the fandom saw red for all the female characters getting killed off and were all too willing to share Freddie's 'death' being the icing on the cake.
