don't you know you're only allowed one badass ass-kicking ninja-type female per franchise?? having a 2nd is v. suspicious and means she must be a ripoff of the other.

for srs tho they are very different, like NAtasha is downright loquacious compared to May, when Nat is quiet it's cause she's acting or experiencing trauma, whereas May is phlegmatic by nature. She's Sneaky-sassy, there's no sneak to NAt's sass, she likes like dad jokes.

BRB pitching a show with a cast made up entirely of female ninjas

(also nice use of 'phlegmatic' there. props)

Fantastic reference

I've seen the Natasha likes dad jokes thing before, but what's it based upon?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
probably mostly "can you tell me where the Smithsonian is, I'm here to pick up an antique" at Steve. like tht was SUCH a dad joke, and Steve kinda reacts like she makes those kinds of cracks a lot.

This seriously couldn't be a more perfect first comment. I laughed outright at Natasha liking dad jokes. <3

My first thought on this....

...was of Maurissa's song on Dr Horrible - Commentary The Musical.

This is not helpful to the discussion, self!

I agree completely; thinking that they're "the same" because they both wear black, kick ass, and have violence in their past is a judgement based on superficial similarities.

To me it's more instructive to compare their core personalities, the persona they choose to present to the world, and how they deal with their Dark and Violent Past®.

Chalk it up to how a lot of people still can't female characters AS characters, just as vague tropestacks. And yes, that absolutely includes a lot of women who think of themselves as terrible progressive and feminist.

You gave me an idea for a secret. thanks!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Especially given that 'skilled fighter with a dark and troubled past' is roughly 90% of all non-powered superheroes ever, and a significant portion of the powered ones as well. Huh? I mean, if you can only have one of those per story, that's the entire hero population of Gotham bar Batman gone at a stroke.

I've actually only just started Agents of SHIELD and Ming-Na's character is the prime motivation so far for watching the show. I can't wait to see what dark and troubled past she has.

I haven't seen anyone saying this(I don't hang out in AoS spaces though) but it doesn't make sense, aside from them both being good at fighting they're very different.

Image: Melinda May from Agents of Shield, about to punch your face in.

Text: I get pissed off when people act like she’s Black Widow with the serial numbers filed off.

Seriously, just because they are both skilled fighters with “Dark and Troubled Pasts” and are female and attractive doesn’t mean she’s an Asian clone of the other.

They both have VERY different reactions to what they went through, different personalities, etc. Don’t be lazy.

I've never seen the show but recently I stumbled upon some Melinda May videos on YouTube and I think I might be in love! So much so that I might give the show a chance desipite its horrible reviews. Is she a major character or will she pop in and out for a couple of minutes per episode where I can hardly see her?

Because if it's the latter, meh. Ming-na is the only reason I'd ever watch this show.

[personal profile] thezmage 2015-01-16 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Major character. She's not always front and center, but she's a major character.
