Didn't he get some people killed by introducing Picard to the Borg? (Granted, this also served as preparation for the Borg's arrival . . .)

Q said he was giving the Federation time to prepare, but it's also possible that the Q-initiated interaction is what brought the Federation to the Borg's attention in the first place.

No, if you watch the last episode of the first season they find destroyed outposts near the Romulan Neutral Zone. At first they think it's the Romulans, but then they realize it's something much scarier.

Then in the second season Q Introduces them to the Borg.

I am always surprised at how few fans realize that the Enterprise had already found traces of the Borg in the final episode of season 1. They were already there. Q just gave them a heads-up.
