Other than Wandering Son, the trans* characters I remember from manga are kind of...comic hero sidekick types?

Like Aoi in You're Under Arrest, who was an eccentric bishie crossdresser cop or something (and not at all central to the book).

They're meant to be funny, mostly.

I get what you mean about "serious" works kind of moping along. I liked a lot of Wandering Son anyway.

Yeah, Wandering Son just moved a little slow for me. I can't handle the trans joke characters, and I can't stand the tragi-trans narrative.

Basically, these days, the only trans characters I like tend to be in speculative fiction (either prose or comics), mostly written by trans people. And even then, it's a close call.

Seriously, sometimes I just want to read about a trans person going about their life, and not being a huge joke or tragedy about man's inhumanity to man.
