I know a fair bit about the fraught history of the term "colored"--and "Coloured" in South Africa. And boy, there are lots of issues there.

I don't mean to be malicious. I used the term in another thread on this page because it popped into my head. I blame Lou Reed.

I do get that it's a quick way to offend someone, but I roll my eyes at people who act like it's a dirty word.

Yeah, I guess when people get words like "colored" and "nigger" thrown at them to make them feel lower than dirt, they tend to think it's, well, a dirty word. You sound like a class act

na

the usage of the word "colored" in South Africa historically has a very different context than it does in America. there's a good reason for why people (especially black people who have had it used against them) think it's a "dirty" word

ugh

:sigh:

There's a reason I'm on anon today.

"Colored" is a stupid term, as is "white." If you were actually white,
you'd look dead. We are all colored, just some of us darker than others.

I'd rather treat the term as a joke than give it power by fearing it.

hey, even if that's your stance, it's dumb as fuck to say something like "i roll my eyes at anyone who acts like it's a dirty word"

that is dumb as fuck

Fine, I knew it was stupid when I said it.

ayrt

well, good luck not getting your ass kicked when you tell people you have a "colored girls fetish" I guess

Maybe try going with faint-skinned and dark-skinned, that's the usual terms used around here where I am.

(because certain ethnic minorities that are many here can have dark or faint skin and they each get their own racism directed at them)

But way better than POC, which is an annoying american term entirely too close to colored and dismissive of other minorities...

Except you don't belong to the group that it's used against as a slur, so it's pretty bad form to dismiss how they feel and say you're just reclaiming it.
