There are several characters that always make me take a second glance when writers use their first name.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more annoying when they get them wrong. I once read a fic where Chakotay called Janeway "Katie". It took me half the fic to realise it wasn't an OC.

Oh my god, no.

Image: screen shot of Spock, Kirk, and McCoy from Classic Trek

Text: I know it’s his name, but every time fic writers refer to McCoy as Leonard I think they mean Nimoy and IT’S SO CONFUSING!!!!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was a kid, I was convinced that Leonard Nimoy and Mark Lenard had to be connected in real life, even though "Leonard" and "Lenard" are spelled differently

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He sometimes gets called 'Leo', that's even worse.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Or "Len". *shudders*

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
SAME. I also think it's because I don't think anyone refers to McCoy as Leonard in the actual series. It's either "McCoy", "Doctor", "Bones", "Doctor McCoy". Has anyone actually called him Leonard in the show or movies? I can't remember.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No-one has, as far as I know. Just like he's never been called "Leo", "Len" or even "Lenny"
*needs a beer*

I actually think I've seen a fic that called him Lenny. I've never hit the backbutton so fast. *needs a beer too*

I immediately pictured Lenny Kravitz and the character on the Simpsons.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm picturing some obnoxious car salesman, testing the waters.

(hehe)

I think he was called 'Leonard' once... in the episode with the salt-vampire thingy. I swore I remembered her calling him Leonard and/or Len... I need to google the transcript.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember that episode. Is that what his girlfriend called him?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeh, you're right! Nancy, she called him Leonard. She also called him 'Plum' :D That's still better than Lenny.

Kirk calls him Leonard rather tongue-in-cheek in the episode 'Friday's Child':

SPOCK: The child was named Leonard James Akaar?
MCCOY: Has a kind of a ring to it, don't you think, James?
KIRK: Yes. I think it's a name destined to go down in galactic history, Leonard. What do you think, Spock?
SPOCK: I think you're both going to be insufferably pleased with yourselves for at least a month, sir.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe, I loved that episode.
But that exchange also shows it's as kind of as weird to call Bones Leonard as it is to call Kirk James.

Just adding onto this, but I also don't like Spock/McCoy fic that has Spock referring to McCoy as "Leonard". I know it's supposed to illustrate an intimacy between them, but it still feels awkward to me.
lb_lee: The Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, doubled over laughing. (bwa-hah-ha)

And then there was the X-men/Star Trek crossover comic. You had two Dr. McCoys and two Scotts. And there was much lulz and confusion to be had.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved that comic!! "Dr. McCoy!" *both Beast and Bones look up scowling* "What?"

Leonard... it just sounds wrong to call Bones that!

I do like the name though, I love it on Leonard Nimoy and it makes me think of Leonard Cohen and "Because of" which is such an intense song - "Look at me, Leonard" ♥

Also, Mark Lenard played Sarek.

Even worse, comic book artist Leonard Kirk drew a few Star Trek issues when he was starting out.

You have to embrace the ubiquity of Leonard in Star Trek.
