AYRT

Using AO3, given that FFnet doesn't 'technically' have a mature/explicit category anymore so there's no way to know how many of its fics flaunt that rule or don't.

My last fandom, pretty popular and pretty recent. Mostly a female-centric fanbase, I'd say mostly in the 16-25 age group but some older.

Mature and Explicit fics combined get almost five times (4.8 to be exact - approx 90,000 vs approx 18,000) the amount of hits than Gen fic. Explicit fic alone gets over 60,000 hits.

Mature and Explicit fics combined have over 5000 Kudos, vs less than 1000 kudos for Gen fic. Explicit alone get over 3000.

Mature and Explicit fics combined have over 2000 comments compared to gen fics not even scraping 200.

I'd also cite many years in fandom, and many experiences (my own and others') like OP's where it's always the smutfics in any given fandom gaining the most traction over more complex plotty fics, gen or otherwise, but that's all anecdotal.

SA

(Should probably add that all of that comes from a pool of approx 8000 fics, so a reasonable baseline).

1. By only using AO3, you're automatically introducing a selection bias. FF.net may not have an explicit category, but it still hosts an awful lot of fic (far more than AO3) and plenty of it is gen, which tells you that there's a big audience for non-explicit fanfic.

2. Aggregate numbers are no use. If there's five times as many mature/explicit fics, then them having five times as many hits is no big surprise. The same with kudos and comments. Fics will also tend to have more hits, kudos and comments if they have more chapters.

3. I would say (based on my own many years in fandom) that a lot of people are into fanfic for the porn, but also that a lot of people are into fanfic for the romance, and that a lot of people are into fanfic because they can pair their self-insert with their fave, and that a lot of people are into fanfic because they can beat up on their fave and then have the other characters cuddle them. Porn is certainly popular but I wouldn't say the "vast majority" are "only in it" for that.
