What's the breakdown of the things people are reading, though?

Just because there are more General Audience fics posted, it doesn't mean those are the fics people are reading and commenting on.

Of the 20 fics with the most kudos, 6 of them are explicit. Quite a few are rated M though. But there's also T and G rated fics mixed in there.

If you sort by hits, it's the same thing 6/20 are explicit.

So, according to that, 33% of the most read/liked fics are explicit, but what is the percentage of explicit fics vs. all other fics?

so there's near enough the same amount of Gen fics as there are Mature + Explicit combined.

Most popular Gen fic has 2387 comments, 5838 kudos and 91453 hits.

Most popular Teen+ fic has 3683 comments, 7320 kudos and 290000 hits.

Most popular Mature fic has 36222 comments, 8521 kudos and 258856 hits.

Most popular Explicit fic has 6223 comments, 6523 kudos and 207664 hits.

Is that a typo in the # of comments on the most popular mature fic?

Nope.

It is a 708 chapter fic though. And a epistolary style, so very short chapters and probably a lot of response. Not in the fandom so I haven't read it, but yeah, I did a double-take at that number too.

The second most popular mature fic has 4971 comments, if you'd prefer to look at that and not the fic skewing the numbers.

If you sort all fics by number of hits, explicit stories do seem to be over-represented in the first pages. But I lack the time/interest to properly research this.

AO3 statistics!

Welp, okay, I went ahead and did some basic math. I compared the percentage of fic in each category with the percentage of fic of each category that were among the 65 fics with more hits. Results:



The most common fics were rated 'Teen and Up'. Gen fics represent a 24.1% of all the fic, but only a 7.69% of the most viewed fics. Most of the fics in the most viewed list were explicit (49%), even thought explicit fics only amount for 16.6% of the total.

Conclusion: Gen fic is very underrepresented and explicit fic is EXTREMELY overrepresented in the list of most viewed fics.

Things to take into account: small sample size (n=65 for a N=1,461,217 is abysmal), 22,921 fics were filtered out of the search for some reason (notice that the total number of fics was 1,461,217, but if you added all the fics by rating you got 1,438,296).

Without getting access to more data, this is the best I can do.

If you wondered, it's a joke in General Comments. Whenever someone starts topics like Where you live/your gender/what side do you sleep on people call Spreadsheet Anon, who allegedly gathers all the info for purposes unknown.

(I write a lot of Teen and Up genfic-- teen for occasional violence-- and I've always been happy with the number of hits and comments I get. Given these stats I'm really grateful now!)
