Re: Pet Peeves thread

This is going to make me sound anti-working mom, so let me say I am not against women working if they have kids! If anything, I'm sick of women being called selfish for also working.

At the same time, don't be surprised when you get in trouble for calling out all the time because of your kids. I've had two or three coworkers get upset because "you don't care about my family." Um, actually, the manager does care. And if it were an emergency situation (it never has been), she'd be understanding. The manager also cares when she can't find coverage at the last minute because you never have a plan B, even though you know your husband gets called into work all the time.

(I did feel a little bad for that particular coworker, because it sounded like his job was trying to ensure they had no life. But it wasn't our problem, you know?)

Yeah, people have to understand that you can't have it all. It's not fair to your co-workers. Having children is a choice and that means that you may be forced to sacrifice for it.

I do think it's unfair how WOMEN tend to bear the brunt of this (not always, as there are some wonderfully supportive husbands).

But still -- you can't expect your coworkers to be screwed over because you wanted children. The children are YOUR responsibility, not your coworkers' so they shouldn't pay the price for your choices.

In an ideal world, you should be able to have it all. And I don't think that there's any intrinsic reason why we should be forced to choose between either parents getting screwed over, or the coworkers of parents getting screwed over.

That said, I agree with you insofar as we're talking about the world as it exists right now.

How though? Even in an ideal world there would still only be 24 hours in a day, and still a limit on the amount of people available at any given time.

How do you propose the world change so that a parent can go out and work long enough to pay for things AND devote all their time to raising their kids?

Because unless you're bringing in robots, it ain't happening.

Make it so it takes less time to make enough money.

Yes, and how exactly is that ever going to happen?

This sounds less anti-working mom and more anti-working irresponsible idiots, which anyone can be.

I'd feel the same about a guy who got upset because people didn't like him calling out all the time because he had a dog who was always escaping his house or something. Do something about the situation or deal with the consequences

Yeah, I've known folks who just really seem to feel that the world should run around their convenience. They get as far as perceiving their own wants and feelings, and that's obviously the most important thing, right?

Unfortunately, there are always seems to be that one person who is doing her darnedest to ruin it for the rest of us by blaming her lack of work ethic on motherhood. My office had one new mom who mysteriously always needed to pump whenever anyone asked her to actually get off her ass and do something. There's still enough of a cloak of mystery around breast-feeding in the US that I think the older male manager was afraid to question her, but, generally speaking, if you need to pump 5 times in 8 hours you should probably talk to your doctor. But, for every person who tries to work the system, there are many more who are trying to do right by their kids and still do their jobs, and people like your coworker make it harder for them to do that.
