Yeah it is. I was born in Europe but live in the US. The US is, undoubtedly, a more violent society than Europe (with the proliferation of guns and all). And there's definitely racism (especially towards black and Latino people).

But at the same time, when Europeans condemn the US on racism, it sets me on edge. Because you know the racism Americans treat Mexicans with? That's very similar to how Europeans treat the Roma. Or when Europeans condemn the violence against black people and point at Ferguson? Those are injustices, for sure, but don't pretend that Paris in 2005 didn't have similar issues crop up.

Not saying the US is perfect (hell no), but neither is Europe. And I see both sides criticize the other for doing exactly the same things (just to different groups). And then they say "But it's DIFFERENT!"

I've had this argument before, both other places and on here, and it's impossible because all anyone says is, "No, Roma really are like that, we're totally justified in hating them, they're awful." Because apparently people who are racist against African-Americans don't really believe that African-Americans are bad or something. I don't fucking know.

In other words, yes, I completely agree with what you're saying

...didn't Hungary drive out all the Roma, not so long ago? Like, in the last three or four years?

No, we didn't. But our prime minister is a racist fuck, so we're getting there *sigh*

All the Roma people I've ever seen were begging for money. That's most people's experience. That and the kids trying to steal your money when you buy a ticket for the subway. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of Roma people being integrated and successful in Western Europe, but most people don't know and why would they look it up anyway?

i don't know

to not be fucking racists, maybe?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they should think 'those people are begging for money because society is racist as fuck so they don't give them jobs that would help them not to be begging in the streets'? Rather than 'oh, all Roma are dirty beggars and thieves'?

There are Gypsy panhandlers in New York City too.
