(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)In my opinion, it wasn't right or wrong for them to support the Taliban when Afghanistan was being invaded; in my opinion, it was wrong for the USA to think that throwing guns and military support/money at the Taliban, would make the mujahideens somehow magically turn into a fully-Westernized democratic political group, once they had triumphed over the Soviets. It was either very naive, or extremely short-sighted, and gave us the situation we have in the Middle East today.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)I think the strongest critique you can make here is probably a failure on America's part not to stay involved with Afghanistan after the fact. But I'm honestly not sure how much they could have been expected to, or whether anyone could have reasonably foreseen the consequences that ended up happening. Sometimes things just come up snake-eyes.
