Maksim Gorki's Mother. I'm not very far in, but it's been good so far.

I admit I automatically dislike anything written by Gorki because he's just about the only writer whom I still can't stop side-eyeing for his participation in the Belomor Canal literary project (basically, a bunch of writers were invited to look at how prisoners from labour camps were constructing the White Sea-Baltic Sea Canal, aka the Belomor Canal, and write uplifting stories based on their experience). Plus, 'The Song of the Stormy Petrel' just makes me laugh a lot every time.

But he's certainly very talented. I remember enjoying 'At the Lower Depths' in spite of myself. Perhaps 'Mother' is one of his better works (I never gave it a go because I disliked Gorki too much).
