I had an English teacher who could quote entire poems and soliloquies off the top of his head (even some more obscure stuff) One of my friends once wrote the first line of a Allen Ginsberg poem on his board and when he saw it, he proceeded to recite the rest of it. I think it's pretty impressive and I'm actually slightly jealous. There's a couple lines I've memorized from "classical" literature I like (Antigone and Les Miserables are the only ones I can think of now) but nothing to that degree.

Let me guess, that first line was "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness", wasn't it?

I can do a lot of poems and soliloquies from memory; it's something I started doing when I was young so I could entertain myself when I was stuck somewhere with nothing to read. I think the longest ones I know by heart are "The Raven" and "A Tale of the Thirteenth Floor" by Ogden Nash.

If I read/watch something 2-3 times I can quote entire chunks of it and I don't forget it - if I put in a bit of effort I can memorise poetry and prose easily. I was in a high school production of Antigone (nearly 20 years ago) and can still recite all of Antigone's and Ismene's lines. While this was very handy for exams and for trivia games, it's not a terrifically useful skill otherwise, so I feel for the OP when people consider memorising movies to mean you're a "real fan".
