Re: Well, for one, my city now has an army presence, apperently...

That's kind of scary. :( Is it in response to a suspected threat, or are they just establishing a presence?

Two (supposedly unrelated) terrorist suspects were killed in Belgium as well. This is the result. We're now apparently in "phase 4" terror alert, whatever the hell that means. Combine that with a right-wing mayor - well, there you go.

13 were arrested along with the two killed in connection with a plan to kill officers in the streets.

You're one of the top five with the most individuals returned from Syria (and IIRC most per capita). I can understand them playing it safe.

Letting the army loose on citizens is rarely a good idea.

There's been a few articles about Belgium in our local newspaper (Germany), and at least the articles made it sound as though the police were reacting to actual and more or less immediate threats? And apparently you have the highest amount of people going to and coming back from Syria, so I understand why they would up the terror alert.

Though having the freaking tanks in front of my house would frighten me a lot more than an intangible terror threat, ngl. Your mayor sounds somewhat scary from the quote in the article you linked above. Is the threat that big in your city?

No. The two terror suspects were killed in a completely different city. The reason they're scared, from what I understand, is that Antwerp has both a significant Muslim and a significant Jewish community and they fear tensions.

But to be clear, there is at this point no evidence of an terrorism in my city.

We do have a lot of people returning from Syria, yes.

And I understand more alertness - but military tends to do badly as a police force.

At least it's actual military, instead of militarized police? That's what's happening in a lot of parts of America, and it's kind of the worst of both worlds (some pros and cons of military, some pros and cons of police - but militarized police seems to be all cons with none of the pros).

Well, we'll see. At this point I'm more worried about this escalating than about actual terrorism.

On the one hand, I can understand them wanting to prepare just in case, especially if there's a reason to worry. On the other hand, when there's no evidence of terrorism or actual tension between the two communities, calling in the army seems not just overkill, but frightening for everyone, and creating tension unwittingly between the communities.

And if you go by the article, it's like your mayor just said out-right that he thinks that the Muslim community is a threat to the Jewish one. Fucking hell.

You ought to feel safe. And appreciative that you can be protected.

Unless there was a direct and tangible threat, the military on my front lawn would not make me feel safe. To be honest, it would frighten the shit out of me.

They don't have any obligation to feel anything.

Unless Europe has done away with democracy...?
