(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 02:52 am (UTC)(link)Best example: 'The Princess Bride'. Love that, seen it at least a dozen times (more like 20+) - and yet, I could only regurgitate a small number of the memorable lines if pressed. Even that probably has less to do with having seen the movie over a dozen times, and more to do with the fact that it is quoted EVERYWHERE ON THE INTERNET ALL THE TIME.
Made the mistake of watching it with Himself and his circle of geek friends once and they basically ruined the whole fucking thing for me by - Every. Single. One of them - chanting pretty much the whole thing word for word, start to finish. In the most incredibly smug, self-satisfied manner possible. I was like, "Shut the fuck up you assholes, I'm trying to enjoy the damned movie! I can't even hear it! (P.S. will be filing for divorce in the morning kthxbye.)"
But if you can't quote Vizzini's entire final speech word-perfect - screw that, inflection-perfect - from start to finish, it's held up as PROOF that "you don't really like this movie at all do you". Yeah, well done. You caught me. I was just pretending to enjoy it, because it's some sort of geeky test I have to pass to meet your approval.
AAAAAAAARRRRGGHHH
*takes rant hat off*
...Thank God I'm not into the whole 'Star Wars' franchise, that really would be a whole new level of hell.
