Yeah, that might be a good way of thinking about it (re: composition fallacy).

It's definitely an intensely frustrating argument when people use it against positions I agree with. On the other hand, I'm not sure that I agree with the last part of your post. What about a situation where a group has some members that are moderate and reasonable but the actions of the group as a whole do not reflect their values? What if, I guess, the weak-man case is actually valid?

Bahhhhhh. All this 'trying to argue fairly' stuff is for the birds.
