I do like Manic Panic, myself. It stays in my hair well, and the colors are what I look for. Crazy Color is another really good one, and the two layer over one another without you hair falling off. And CC has a great magenta -- really bright pop with more purple than pink (personal preference). Also, L'Oreal and Garnier Fructis have some great purples and reddy-burgundies, if you find you want to go a darker route. Sometimes box sets have bleach incorporated into the dye, so make sure to read everything first.

I have really dark brown hair, so I have to bleach as well. Get some of the GOOD hair bleach. You're still burning the color our of your hair, so follow the instructions very carefully. Try the shortest recommended time first to see how your hair will react -- some brands work faster depending on your own hair chemistry (an' shit). You could also have small chunks that are easily accessible, and scrape off the bleach to check the time. I start rinsing when I'm a little bit darker than I want to be. That way, I don't accidentally burn my hair off or go too light between realizing it's time and getting in the shower. If you don't leave it in long enough, your hair will be orange. If you go the max length and it's still orange, try another brand.

Once you've colored it, wash your hair as infrequently as you're comfortable with, and use cold water. I've noticed a difference in longevity when I do. Also, regular bar soap is just as good as shampoo, and seems to take less of the color out.

And ex always took her straighter to the dyed parts as soon as it was dry. I've never tried it myself, but she swears by it. If it works, I imagine it's the same idea as ironing ink into fabric.

OP - sorry for the late reply, and thank you for all the info! I'm still vacillating between doing my hair myself and getting it done professionally, though I'm leaning towards the former. My hair's pretty long at the moment so I'm thinking I can do a dip-dye sort of thing and if I end up hating it I can just have it cut shorter, heh.

Crazy Color looks like it has some fun colours! The Pinkissimo colour looks so nice, eek. Deciding on colours is gonna be some task =P

I generally don't use shampoo but I do wash and condition every day in either lukewarm or cold water - hopefully that's okay for the colour longevity...

Now I just need to decide on the colours and style of dyeing I want to do - it's gonna be either an ombre kind of dip-dye, or just a few streaks, depending on how adventurous I'm feeling =D

Conditioner! I totally forgot about that! Use conditioner til the cows come home! It doesn't necessarily make it stay longer, but it helps prevent stripping due to other things.

And have fun with it!
