Interesting. I've seen mostly only positive stuff, but the people i know in rl who've seen them are all pretty much 'meh' on them.

I've mostly seen negative reactions from the fandom and more positive from more casual fans, though there are certainly exceptions. I've just had a hard time finding places to talk about it positively with Tolkien fans. I'm a huge book fan and still happen to like the movies. They mostly just do their own thing and I'm okay with that.

I was *so* happy and enamored of the LotR movies, the Hobbit ones just...disappoint. They're not *bad*, per se, just...not up to the standard, to me, is all.

I was a huge Tolkien fan as a teenager, and I appreciate the way he thought about folklore, and I can accept that these movies are just a version of the story, that's been "in the soup."

So this movie series having lots of new inclusions instead of being a super-faithful adaptation is an understandable variation. It's not a disaster, any more than the weird illustrations his books would get in different translations were disastrous.

They're just not a very good accomplishment. The new stuff added to the first movie was very generic kids-cartoon stuff. I didn't bother (or haven't bothered yet) with the second and third installments.
