Pretty sure the general consensus by critics is that the movies were really terrible. They bring in money because they are LOTR, of course, but I don't recall any of them getting good reviews.

I don't think i've even read any reviews outside fandom. I find most reviews to be weird - they focus on strange things or don't seem to really know what they're talking about most of the time.

But that's interesting.

They have 60-74% on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn't the worst you could do, but the original trilogy is all above 90%, so yeah. And ROTK swept the Oscars while this last Hobbit movie has a single nomination for sound editing.

Yeah, RoTK is in a three-way tie for most Oscars ever won by a film.
