WOO BAND GEEK!

(Bassoon here. Also piano, flute, and pit. Alas, writing and art are much stronger skills for me.)

Pit as in, percussion pit? That's awesome! (And the variety is awesome.)

I was a hornist, with a tad bit of trumpet on the side.

Woooo French Horn! And yup, pit percussion, because bassoons can't march. (Well, technically they can, but they sound godawful.) I was on vibraphone and marimba, since I already knew the key layouts from a childhood on piano.

I still think the marimba has one of the most soothing, beautiful sounds of the musical instruments.

One of my high school band directors was a percussionist and the guy plays a mean marimba. He did a solo once with our band playing. So. cool.

(It really is a beautiful instrument!)

It so is! A shame the damn things are so fucking CUMBERSOME though. Maneuvering one of those monsters down a football field without help was an accomplishment, let me tell you! (Our band parents were in short supply, so we generally only could manage one person per thing needing moving. Our high school best friend and pit leader became a MASTER at hauling it, though.)

I bet it kept you in great shape!

My concert band and orchestra in high school were fabulous but unfortunately the marching band was pretty shitty. Don't get me wrong, I marched all four years and I loved it, but it wasn't a very good band. We definitely didn't have a percussion pit (though listening to the drumline show off was always really fun).

Oh don't get me wrong, we were DREADFUL. We got last place at least once in competition. But we had a ton of fun, and got to do GREAT shows (Sweeney Todd and Nightmare Before Christmas), so I have no regrets.
