Re: how to buy a vacuum

I really freaking love my Dyson. I think I've had it for about 8 years now, and it still works awesomely, and it's easy to maintain if you're a little bit handy with taking things apart (which are meant to come apart, I mean). Just open it up now and then and wash off various bits, cut the inevitable long hair off the brush, pop it back together, good as new.

I've talked to a few other Dyson owners and they agree it's worth the extra cost just for being so long-lasting, easy to maintain, and generally working so nicely. I forget what model I have, it was just the cheapest base model they had at the time I bought it, and although I had briefly thought of getting the pet-specific version, no need, even though at one point we had 4 cats and 4 rabbits all under one roof. The basic model handled it fine.

On the flip side, I'm pretty sure my mom mentioned that one of our relatives who worked as a hotel maid mentioned that what they did was just get the uber-cheap vacuums, and although they wouldn't last more than a year, they did fine and were like $30. So it depends on if you want to think of a vacuum as an investment, or a small regular payment.
