I thought a lot of the cultures in the Tortall books were basically meant to be equivalents to real Earth cultures. Like Alanna visits that land that's obviously meant to be Middle Eastern, the people Keladry (I think) lives with who are obviously based on the Japanese. I sure didn't imagine all those characters to be white.

And then aren't the people on the islands Alianne goes to described as dark-skinned?
