There are definitely upsides to not using a beta, mainly in speed of posting. When I'm writing for a fest or something, I usually leave 2 weeks for the beta just in case they can't do it immediately.

I think the main downside is that it's too easy to get used to not using a beta, and then it's hard to go back.

Yeah, in my case, it's a matter of priorities. One of my back-burner projects is a MASSIVE epic alternative history fantasy where the Roman Empire never existed. If I don't get it mainstream published, I plan to try and Kickstart it and design the book myself.

Regardless, I would NEVER try and pull that until the book had been thoroughly critiqued and edited by numerous people.

But most of my stories are flash fiction, to be sold once, posted once, and enjoyed by all. What matters to me is popping them out fast and as well as I can, even if that means unbetaed.
