31. Unfortunate for me I haven't even heard about it before the previews of the movie x_x I think their singing was pretty good for actors that haven't sung before, to tell you the truth. Could have been A LOT worse.

Steven Soundheim, the guy who wrote the music for the Sweeney Todd stage production, actually worked with the actors on the music. So obviously, if it was good enough for him, then it was good. XD He also said he likes actors who can sing rather than singers who can act.

I think Johnny Depp didn't even want to be in the film 'cause there was singing. D: People really blow that movie out of proportion.

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yea? I didn't know that! *totally lives under a rock*

He also said he likes actors who can sing rather than singers who can act.
haha I agree with him. Well I think he did a pretty good job training with them then, from what I heard none of them had any singing experience.

Wow Johnny Depp did very well for not wanting to sing then. I'm convinced he could play anything though, seriously >>

Johnny Depp is amazing. Personally he's one of the few actors I actually have an ounce of respect for. XDD

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, I think he's an amazing actor & one of the few my brain could actually remember. He could just play anything. He could play a glass of milk for a whole movie & i'm sure people would still think he's outstanding xDD

(Anonymous) 2008-01-01 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
NO

Just... no.

Also, Stephen Sondheim.

Whatever. I got like...two hours of sleep last night. Spelling isn't really an issue. XD

(Anonymous) 2008-01-01 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
So obviously, if it was good enough for him, then it was good

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you on that, every Sweeney Todd fan has all the right to have different opinions from Sondheim, we don't have to accept it as good because he said it was good.

[identity profile] rainbloom.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Actually Johnny Depp did want to be in it, and practiced really hard for all the singing~

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
No. No, he didn't.

"''I was talking to people and they were saying, Well, of course you're going to get a singing teacher,'' he says. ''And I said, 'Oh, yeah-yeah! Of course I will. Yeah.' '' Instead, Depp ran as far from formal instruction as he could. ''I just didn't see the character developing with me doing scales in front of a piano and a vocal teacher going, 'No, no — bring it up from the bollocks,' '' he says. ''That kind of thing would have been a disaster. I would still be rehearsing right now. Or I'd have been fired.''"

From this interview right here (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20155516_20155530_20155983_2,00.html).

So in other words, no. He didn't spend any time in actual music rehearsals. At all. Ever. He was too good for them, I guess, since he could be spending all of his time developing his character. Except... wait, he didn't do that either, as far as I can tell.

[identity profile] rainbloom.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Um, did I say professional rehearsal? No. I just said practice. And, I get that maybe you didn't like the movie, that's fine, but the way you worded the comment kinda... made ya look like a bitch :/

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2008-01-04 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
"... made ya look like a bitch :/"

It was more meant as sarcasm and lulz, but you're more than welcome to take it offensively if you want to. Hard to convey emotion through text. I don't care either way.

That said, I liked the movie itself a lot. I just didn't like Johnny Depp in it. Opinions, gasp!

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I see your point, but I don't think "Coulda been worse!" should ever be an excuse for a multi-million dollar movie.

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2008-01-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just saying, it's not like the actors were out of tune & such. It's not like they sounded like shit, by far from it. You can't go by me because I've never seen or heard the music from the play, but by going by the movie & knowing that the actors had no singing experience whatsoever, they were pretty damn good.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-02 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
You can't go by me because I've never seen or heard the music from the play

OPINION DISCOUNTED!

Sondheim: not for amateurs.

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, how mature of you =P

I think the whole play vs. movie thing is going wayyy out of hand. all I said was that the singing wasn't bad, which it wasn't, it's not like they sounded like a bunch of dying animals. geez.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen plenty of his stuff, and preformed two of em. I've also seen good chunks of the play. In fact, "Nothing's gonna harm you" was my childhood lullaby. I was a theater kid for....psh, years. Enough street cred to have an opinion? Good.

I thought the movie was good, well made, and had very good singing. On stage you can get away with being an incredibly good singer and being just a manageable actor. You can't in movies. To sing WHILE acting is incredibly hard.

I didn't enjoy the movie, but I'd have the exact same issue with the play (Which is why I've never sat it through). I was really impressed with the singing, the acting, and the cinematography. The costumes were amazing, etc etc. It wasn't perfect, and you'll lose some things on screen always, but it was a damned good adaption.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-02 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
YOUR COMMENT MAKES NO SENSE

AS USUAL

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
well that's rude of you, but I guess it's easy to be that way when no one knows your identity, annonymous.

"I didn't enjoy the movie, but I'd have the exact same issue with the play (Which is why I've never sat it through)."

that part may have been a little iffy, but the rest makes sense.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Danke.

Pretty much it means, it's a depressing play about depressing people meeting their depressing end, and I'm more a happy fluffy type gal. But that's MY issue not the play/movies.

But don't mind that mouse, they're just a stereotypical cap locks happy bitter ol' mouse who apparently is stalking me or something, IDK.

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
ah okie I got ya now :) I agree, I like the happy stuff too, but considering the movie was gloomy, it was still pretty cool :)

lol it does seem that way xP

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like it was good for what it was, I just don't much like what it was. Different strokes kinda thing.

I'm assuming they're an anon I've butted heads with before, IDK. Internet arguing is a guilty pleasure of mine, so I've probably tussled with someone who's bitter or something. I just can't imagine taking it so srsly they'd remember my SN on a site like this.

[identity profile] penguinfaery.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Are you ESL or somethan? Or just that dumb? I'd go for the latter, personally.

I mean, really, you'd have to be mentally incapable for that not to make sense. Did you fail the reading comprehension bits in school?

I'd say "Did the big words mess you up" but there are none, really. Cinematography? Manageable?

(Anonymous) 2008-01-02 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
You should really listen to the original music because that's exactly the issue here, they're not bad, they're just not good enough compared to (most) stage ensembles. At least to me, some people are simply overreacting and I find that they're a lot of redeeming elements that make up for the less than stellar singing.

[identity profile] omg-its-gackt.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no I'm sure that the original music can blow the movie away, which the musical is most likely always better than the movies (which I can only say by Rent & Hairspray xD;). I was just saying they weren't horrid like everyone seems to make them out to be.
I do think that people are overreacting about it though. I mean..it's just a movie.
