Does anyone know how much input Sondheim had on the movie? Something tells me he wouldn't have allowed Tim Burton to do it if he didn't agree with his vision.

He was involved nearly every step of the way, and agreed with the cutting of extraneous songs. He said he wanted it to be a movie instead of a musical filmed as a movie, so.

That doesn't preclude the right to an unsatisfied opinion, of course! But he said he was very happy with the movie as an adaption.

Oh, people can have all the opinions of the movie that they want! I was just wondering what the composer thought of it considering all the opinions against it I have heard.

I should really get around to see it.

he was actually really involved. He was major in casting, and okayed JD and HBC. He worked on the score and helped adapt it, and it seems like he was right there with Tim Burton from the beginning. So I think he must be happy with how it turned out, since he had so much input.

One thing that keeps getting overlooked is that, while Sondheim was involved, other members of the original creative team were not. And I'd wager that Hal Prince had at least as much to do with the aesthetic of the original play as Sondheim did.

I.E. Sondheim's opinion, while important, is nowhere near the be-all, end-all.

Yeah, but considering how badly Prince fucked up Merrily, I'm not too upset.
