If a character's straight, it should be relative to the story. If a character's gay, it should be relative to the story.

First of all, I believe the word you're searching for is "relevant."

Second of all, I know you think that you think that, but be honest with yourself: when was the last time you complained about a character being portrayed as straight because it wasn't "relative to the story"?

Also, Torchwood. I like it, but honestly, what are the odds?

According to Kinsey, not that bad. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinsey_scale) (Unless you mean "What are the odds that every female in the building would fall for the least attractive man in sight, leaving the two hot ones available to get it on with each other without fear of interruption?" Because I'll give you that one.)

Yeah, relevant, not relative.

As to the odds...(and considering I found Owen to be the hottest, but that's just me), eh. I don't just mean what are the odds that everyone was gay, but more, what are the odds that every single person in a sci-fi type group will get it on with every other person in the group over the course of the programme. And those might be just as good, but it just got, well, tiring after awhile. I like a bit of romance in my sci-fi, but not when every episode turns into "Look who's boinking now!"

when was the last time you complained about a character being portrayed as straight because it wasn't "relative to the story"?

Well, less about "Oh, look at that random straight character!" But I will complain about a romance (or even just a fling) that does nothing to advance the story or the character development (which is all one anyway), whoever it's with.
