I STILL don't get why everyone talks so much about her 'romance'. In DoS I didn't see romance on HER side at all, just Thrandy making assumptions and Legolas all "HOW DARE MY BESTIE MAKE OTHER FRIENDS" and Kili all "The way her hair swishes when she kills things is mesmerizing!!". As a character in and of herself I liked her a lot--all the other elves we meet are nobility whereas she's a bluecollar elf, her curiosity and openmindedness as regards Kili/Dwarves, her rebellion against Mirkwood's isolationism.

BotFA was a bit more blatant as regards googly eyes, but even then I didn't feel hit over the head with romance until Kili died, and that kind of worked for me, like she's going "Why am I feeling all these feelings, I barely knew him, but we had this weird connection and what COULD have been :(".

This, exactly. It wasn't her entire storyline at all, and it wasn't excessive. I think that because it wasn't a canon thing, people are exaggerating in their heads exactly how much of it there was.

I actually really liked her and pretty much saw things exactly as you did. Her scene with poor dead Kili was so sad. I cried more than I cried for Bilbo and Thorin.

I haven't seen the third movie yet, but in the second one, I loved her for exactly the "bluecollar elf" reasons.
