Coulson is def cute, and my type. I wouldn't kick him out of bed, but at the same time I have a dad, and while he's far from perfect I'd rather keep him.

I mean, Coulson could certainly give me advice, and cuddle me when times are tough and all that shit, but we'd have sex afterward and that would be weird if he was my father.

This is an either/or type thing, right? Or a "we find out we're related long after the fact" sort of thing?

I dunno. He seems like a decent guy, all in all - but given the nature of his work - he lies and keep things secret. I wouldn't want a father who hides big things from me (which is ironic, as it's exactly what I got in real life, but I wouldn't have chosen it).

To clarify: I'd love if he was my dad and in a universe where he wasn't my dad (which includes this one) I would bang him like a screen door in a hurricane.

my dad is an enabler for my incredibly emotionally abusive narcissist of a mother, which is a shame because of the pair I know he genuinely loves me.

I'd prefer Coulson in a heartbeat. It kills me to think that, but a lot of things in my life would be very different if my dad would have learned any lessons on being a person from Phil.

I totally understand. My dad is a decent person a good portion of the time (but even if he wasn't racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.) he's a pretty disrespectful (he's said outright mean things about my friends, mother, mother's family in front of me) needlessly aggressive and almost never apologizes for his actions.

I've met men in RL/seen them in media that I've had a passing thought of "I wish my dad was more like you and/or was actually you."

I used to be pretty guilty about it because my dad in some ways has been a good father. But over time I've realized that not being able to trust that your father won't blow up and say some really awful shit to you and then pretend it didn't happen (and possibly even shift the blame to you or someone else) is no way to live.

You're right - it isn't.

He is basically meant to come off as a 'Dad' in the show. The paternal relationship with Skye, the occasionally marriage-like friendship with May, the midlife crisis, the terrible jokes, etc. I suspect the only reason we haven't just named him Fandom Dad is because that would turn a lot of people off after the shipping.

I see him as pretty dad-like, but I also ship him pretty fucking hard with May (even to the point of being totally cool when I come across smut featuring them in fic)
