Go for it, nonnie. Most likely, there won't be a whole lot of people who'll notice the page (and I'm saying this as a member of a tiny fandom whose canon source recently got a TVtropes page of its own); and even if it does attract attention, I don't see what downsides it could bring with it that aren't already a part of what it's like to be a published author.

I agree with this. I'm having trouble thinking of any instances in which it could be a bad thing!

If you want an alternative to TvTopes, perhaps do a fanlore page?

I would love it if someone did that for me because I've discovered a lot of things through TVTropes.

Has there been any time when having a tv tropes page was bad for a creator?

If I were the author, I'd be flattered.

The only potential reason for caution is if the authors in question are also active in fandom and wouldn't want their professional and fannish activites to overlap.

If something like that isn't an issue (and since you say you know them IRL then it doesn't seem likely), then go for it! I bet they'd be thrilled.

Okay, I’m an author. And I’ve had two life-goals ever since I was published: have someone else write fic and have a tv tropes page.

If I were your friends, I’d be thrilled.

You and me both, anon. I've achieved getting fic and fanart, at least! Thrilled me. My fans are few but they are great.

I wish I could have a TVTropes page

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have enough work, nor enough fans, to warrant one. I don't even rate an Encyclopedia Dramatica page.

But maybe someday!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I made a tvtropes page for someone I knew once! It's even still up!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Here's the thing though. Fics and stories linked to TVTropes are usually pretty fucking horrible. So it would be more of an insult.

Text: I’m acquainted with a couple of people in RL who are published authors (of vary levels of popularity, none of them would be considered “famous” however)

I’ve wanted to create works pages for some of their books

because I enjoyed them and I think other people should read them

I’m worried that doing it will somehow bite them in the ass and I’d never want that to happen

I think the worst that can happen is that someone reads the books and nitpicks through them, pulling out every trope they can find, including unflattering ones.

However if that happened, I'd say those authors should - if they saw the TV Tropes pages - take it as a critical analysis and see what tropes they are inclined to use and decide whether they want to use those tropes again (remember, there's even a page titled "Tropes Are Not Bad" and one titled "Tropes Are Tools").
