Exercise Advice

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hey all!

My mom's hurt her foot and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. She used to do a lot of aerobics (mostly treadmill and DVD workouts with jumping and steps and stuff). Now, she can't do that and she's becoming depressed without some exercise.

She works full time and doesn't have time for a gym or anything like that. Does anyone have some aerobic exercises she could do that don't involve her foot?

Tell her she absolutely must stay off the treadmill if anything, those things are awful on the feet.

Swimming is usually the best option. A lot of my other suggestions would involve needing a gym, but she may also look into dvd workouts that emphasis strength building and not being on your feet too much (perhaps some yoga?)

But tell her to REST. It sucks but sometimes that's what you need to do.

Hmm, does she have back problems? I know there's some stuff you can do on your back (Like alternating your legs to your chest/lifting them on your side, etc)

She doesn't have back problems but she has terrible balance and not very good flexibility.

I would be more concerned as to why her hurt foot isn't improving. Has she seen a physician about it?

Yeah, she doesn't do doctors. I cannot tell you how many years she dealt with a skin issue before biting the bullet to see a doctor. I'm not going to be able to talk her into that any time soon.

It's not hurting to the point where she can't walk -- it's just enough where she thinks exercising it probably is a bad idea.

She thinks it's from the shoes she was wearing. She's stopped wearing them but the issue hasn't gone away yet. I'd say wait but she gets really cranky when she's not exercising regularly (the aerobic kind).

Aqua-cise, maybe?

There are a bunch of floor exercises in Pilates that cover a range of intensities. You could probably find some videos on youtube for free.

If she can still stand (without jumping) then she can do squats and wall-sits. Sit ups if you hold her ankles, pushups from the knees.

They're not as thrilling as bouncing around on your feet, but she can put on some music and give it a go.

Learn how to do a pull-up. That's a workout in itself!

Honestly she does need to get a doctor's advice and clearance on exercise but it sounds like that isn't happening. So best course is to simply rest and take it easy. Be patient! You want to nurse the foot, let it heal before you head off again.
