Technical Help Needed!!!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
So, I made a thread a while back asking about torrenting and got some good advice. However, I am apparently completely tech-illiterate because I can't get anything to work (and I ended up downloading a bunch of Adware).

So, can someone provide me with a step-by-step of how to download and then use torrent (like what's bit-torrent and stuff?). Or, provide me with a link to a trusted site that explains it like I've never touched a computer before in my life?

Does anyone have any advice for the Adware. I've uninstalled a bunch of it but my virus protection never picked it up and I'm wary of downloading a program to search for it. What do you trust? Is there something else I could be doing? Do you have to download something or can you do it manually?

Download utorrent from utorrent.com
Go to kickass.to
Find what you want to torrent. Look for the file with the most seeds (and the size you want. The bigger it is, the longer it takes to DL).
Click on the link.
Click on the magnet (when you hover over it says Magnet Link).
A box should come up asking if you want to use utorrent.
Tell it yes/ok.
It should start automatically.
When the file is down downloading, I usually close utorrent down because I am a terrible person who does not seed things.
Enjoy.

For virus protection: Use Malware Bytes and Avast or Avira.

Thanks for the information. However, I think I need more information before I ever get to the point of picking something to download. I did download a torrent and nothing happened. There was a thing on Kickass that said I needed another program too.

I'd like to download this:

https://kickass.so/the-hobbit-2014-battle-of-the-five-armies-dvdscr-xvid-ac3-hq-hive-cm8-t10046515.html

Seriously, I know NOTHING about this kind of stuff so I need it dumbed down even further.

You have installed utorrent right? And make sure you click the Magnet link in the top left hand corner.

I downloaded the torrent that Kickass had on it and then I got adware, so I deleted it all. Everyone says Kickass is fairly reliable but it bit me, so why should utorrent be trusted?

(Plus, the torrent I downloaded, which may or may not have had the issue, didn't open or do anything. It had a .torrent on it but it didn't do anything.)

Not sure if this is your issue, but when you download torrents you 'Open' them, not 'Save' them, as I recall.

You need to download and install the utorrent program from utorrent.com.

That's the reason why nothing happens when you open a .torrent file as you don't have any programs that knows how to handle them.

Kickass is a torrent site, while utorrent is a torrent client, so they're different things.

You download the torrent file, and then you use the torrent client to open the torrent file, and THEN it downloads the actual file you're trying to get. Think of a .torrent file as a bookmark...it's just a file that basically tells the torrent client (like utorrent) where the actual file is located so it can download it.

A .torrent file (ends in ".torrent") is a tiny thing, that tells your bittorrent program (like utorrent.exe) how to download the actual files that are the "torrent." Open the torrent file in your bittorrent program to torrent the torrent. :D

The actual file (.mpeg or whatever) will come from other bittorrent users and a take much longer to download.

What the above said, pretty much. KAT is the only really good, reliable public torrent site these days.

If you're concerned about privacy (anti-p2p groups, etc.) you have 3 options based on how much you want to spend:

The free option is to join a private tracker, but it's about what it's worth in my experience. They don't tend to last long, often require a minimum upload/download ratio which is impossible to meet, and it can be hard to find one that's open signup.

The cheap option is VPN, which a lot of people are using these days. I don't, so I can't really tell you how simple or complicated it is, but it basically works as a middleman between you and the rest of the internet. Someone looking for IPs sees your VPN's IP, not you, and if the VPN keeps your details safe, you're good. They're relatively inexpensive.

The more pricey option is a seedbox, which I generally have no advice on. They're basically remote servers you rent by the month. They're fast and have huge storage space; the way it works is the seedbox torrents for you, then you shuttle the files to you via ftp or https.

I use BitLord. Have had zero issues. So i dl'ed BitLord and installed it.
Went to Kickass, found what i wanted, found the one with the most seeders and clicked on 'get this torrent (or download this torrent).

BitLord automatically opens, and you get two windows - the BitLord program itself, and a smaller one that says 'cancel' or 'get this download'. I choose to 'get', it closes that window and starts the download in the main Bit Lord window. When it's all done, at 100 percent, I then right-click the '100 %' line, and on that menu say 'remove torrent'. Little window pops ups 'remove torrent' again. Because if you don't remove it, it'll set you up as a seeder, something i can't do (basically, lets people dl from your computer).

I've been using Kickass for ages, no issues. Get AdBlockPlus (they have it for Chrome and FF) and, if you want more, get Avast. Both are free, easy to use, and keep my computer 100 percent safe at all times.

Good luck!

Yeah, it's basically what everyone else said, but I'll repeat it again with links you can follow and step by step:

Go to http://www.utorrent.com/ and download the free version. The file uTorrent.exe should now be in your download folder (or wherever you saved the file). Execute it and follow the installation instructions.
Read through the installation process; like all freeware uTorrent tries to install a couple of other things you don't need, so read through the text before clicking "continue". Also, I uncheck the "start uTorrent with Windows" option, but that's YMMV. Definitely check the box that allows uTorrent to bypass the Windows firewall.

You now have uTorrent installed! That's the client you need to download torrents. Now go to KAT: https://kickass.so/the-hobbit-2014-battle-of-the-five-armies-dvdscr-xvid-ac3-hq-hive-cm8-t10046515.html

Always check the health/feedback and comments on the torrent you want to download! The one you want has +5000 thumbs up (right hand upper corner), and most comments are positive, so you're good to go. The seeder/leecher ratio is generally important as well (the more seeders the faster the download goes), but at 20 000 seeders you don't have to worry.

Now downlaod the torrent. In the left hand upper corner, below the seeder/leecher stats, you see a couple of icons. One of them is a magnet (between the heart and the crowns). That's the magnet link. Click on it.

As it's the first time you open a magnet link, a window should come up asking you if you want to use utorrent (except it uses the Greek letter µ instead of 'u'). Click 'OK'.

It might take a couple of seconds, but utorrent should now come up and show you the files that are in the torrent (think of the .torrent file as a zip archive - example.zip is one file that contains example1.doc, example2.jpeg, etc. The same goes for torrents: example.torrent is one file, but with it you download movie.avi, song.mp3, etc. uTorrent shows you the files you will download with the torrent). In this window you can also change the name of the movie and decide where you want to save the movie.

Once you click 'OK' the actual download of the movie will start. What you downloaded just now was only the .torrent file, now utorrent will download the movie (.avi) from peers that have downloaded the same .torrent file as you just did.

uTorrent tells you to how many peers you are connected to, how fast you're downloading, and if there are any problems with your connection.

I just went through all the steps to make this as exact as possible, so this should be exactly how it works. If you come across any problems, let me know!
