The Law&Order franchise has always relied on "ripped from the headlines" storylines- I remember one of the early season one episodes was based on Tawana Brawley. But generally, the stories they were adapting had happened several years prior to the episode's airing, not several weeks. And I don't remember them relying so much on celebrity scandal "headlines" to rip from.

This is true, but with the cancellation of the Mothership and CI, there's no place left for them to do the "ripped from the headlines" stuff but SVU, regardless of whether it's appropriate for the SVU squad to be handling. Or mashing together so many elements obviously taken from disparate recent headlines- Ray Rice, Solange Knowles, Darren Sharper, and Donald Sterling all in one episode, recently!

I will say, though, they did the Jodi Arias-inspired episode (15x18 "Rapist Anonymous") pretty well with regards to the police/legal story alone. I could have done without Amanda's subplot and she shouldn't have ever been left on that case, but it was okay for an L&O "ripped from the headlines" adaptation.
