At the same time, though, there's only so much you can do to redeem Draco by re-evaluating the story. And I guess I just think that to get to the point where he's a decent, brave person, you need to pretty much throw out the entire framework of the story as told by Harry. There's just no way to get there without completely throwing the whole story overboard.
I can agree with the idea that Draco is a much more interesting spineless prick than we see. And if someone is looking to do a character study with that in mind, I can appreciate that. But - and this is just my take - you have to go a real long way until you get to a place where I actually like his character.
