Snape had to die because he would have able to help guide Harry through his killing of Voldemort and Rowling didn't want that for Harry. Imho, of course.

lol @ the idea that Snape would help guide Harry through anything once his revenge was complete and he had no obligation to anymore. Snape gave zero fucks about anything other than Lily, and getting revenge on Voldemort for killing her.

Harry was set to be the one to kill Voldemort, so Snape's biggest chance of killing him would be through Harry. Ergo, Snape would want to help Harry kill Voldy. Rowling had to eliminate the chance that any adult could help Harry with it. I don't see what's so funny about it...

I was more laughing at the notion that Snape would ever willingly or productively help Harry through anything, even killing Voldemort, at least in any more of a hands-on way than his behind-the-scenes help in Deathly Hallows, which was managed fine with Snape dying.

We saw how well direct-contact 'guidance' worked between them with the Occlumency lessons in book 5, productivity was not the result. So it seems weird to believe Rowling killed him off so Harry would have no adults to guide him through killing Voldemort. Snape would never have been the adult to provide this guidance even if he'd lived. I'm not convinced the only reason he was able to do so by dying isn't because that's the only way he would give Harry a real reason to trust him by handing over the full truth of everything. I'm not sure an alive Snape wouldn't have just been all, "The only way Voldemort can die is if you let him kill you first. Off to it, then, go!"
