I feel like I have a relationship with this character as well. Ed shows up in my dreams fairly often, and we talk about random things, just sort of catching up. Once or twice he's let me hold him. ::headscratch:: I don't really have any advice for you. I keep my friendship with him separate from "real life" and it's never interfered with any other relationships.

I can differentiate between real and not-real, too. I just get really, REALLY, really caught up in the not-real sometimes.

Since submitting this, I seem to be unable to slip into the not-real enough to talk to him. Which bothers me deeply. Because letting it out like that cleared out the weirder stuff and I think I'd have been fine with all of it now.

That's probably even more pathetic.

Sorry to get back to this so late, I hope you get to see this.

I've found that my contact with Ed dramatically decreases when I air the secret, even if it's as vague as simply saying, "I had a dream about Ed Elric last night," which more than anything makes me question whether this is all a construction of my subconcious or not. I'm pretty sure he is a construction of my subconscious, but he's not doing me any harm and I enjoy talking with him, so it doesn't really bother me one way or another. If he's not interfering in your day to day life and relationships then it shouldn't be a problem if he talks to you or not. It only becomes something to be concerned about when and if your relationship with him is preventing you from real world (our world) experiences, I guess. Whether he's real or not he does exist on a different plane for us and can't "be there" in our lives the way people in this world can.
