i would say just be honest because there's enough variety with both for your first excuse to be bullshit, but you're dealing with anime fans so just keep doing what you're doing

can't blame you either, i have a lot of trouble getting cape comics because the art style tends to straddle the line between realism and cartoon awkwardly for me

So...Neal Adams is your Uncanny Valley?

Aw, I love Neal Adams! But taste is taste.

A lot of them are like that and I agree they're off-putting. There are some that have more a "traditional" style, like Cowboy Bebop. Basically they are so many kinds of different anime out there that something might appeal to you.

I don't necessarily always hate the big eyes...it depends on the artist. IA about different styles, though. There's a pretty big variety.

That said OP might still not have any interest, and that's fine too.

IA. I don't always hate them - my fave is FMA - but some, like in the secret, can be overwhelming.

Yea, the one in the secret doesn't appeal to me visually either, but it doesn't creep me out. I just wouldn't be interested in watching it unless I knew the story was ~amazing~.

FMA is good! Both series (though I'm more partial to the first. Maybe because of nostalgia, idk).

Why not say you just aren't interested in manga/anime?

Because just like there are many kind of stories, there's more than one drawing style so your "real" reason is still an obvious excuse.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think you'd get much less flak and argument if you told the truth.

Not liking an art style is one thing. "I don't like the stories" when there's such a gamut of genres and themes just makes you look ignorant.

If only there were manga and anime with small eyed characters... It's a shame that every single manga character ever has huge eyes, isn't it?

[personal profile] manzana 2015-01-25 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
They used to freak me out too. I missed on pretty much all the nineties anime because of that.

Text: When people ask me why I’m not into Manga or Anime, I tell them that the stories don’t interest me. But really, it’s because the big eyes creep me the fuck out!

Natsume Yuujinchou has characters with normal sized eyes. You can always ask for recs for anime with more realistic anatomy. A lot of people don't like the typical anime style--there's nothing wrong with that and it's a valid reason to not watch a show. There area a lot of cartoons I won't watch because I don't like the art style.

This is funny, since I recently just read a bunch of gay manga where the characters almost universally had small eyes. (A way to make them look older and tougher, I'm assuming.)

But yeah, some of the REALLY huge eyes are kinda off-putting to me. Same reason I can't handle Margaret Keane's work.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but there's a difference between, like, Fullmetal Alchemist big eyes and freaking Air big eyes. It's a scale, so I'm sure you could find an anime with a style you like if you wanted to (fine if you're not interested, obviously.)

For comparison's sake:

JESUS CHRIST THOSE EYES

Well that depends on the series you're watching. Of all the seasonal anime, 80% of them have characters with huge eyes. And guess who those series pandering to.

ITT list your favorite anime/manga artstyles

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I always liked how FMA was drawn.
And while I wasn't crazy about the story of Death Note, I thought the manga was beautifully drawn.
I thought the whole style of Samurai Champloo was very cool. The outfits in Cowboy Bebop were to ridiculous for me to like though.

If you tell people your reasons, though, maybe someone who's a fan of the genre would be able to recommend something with an art style that wouldn't creep you out?

(Although as someone with weird phobias, I know the feeling of "if I tell somebody I am freaked out by this totally normal thing, they will think I am a big dumb weirdo" so if that's your reason for not saying it, I totally understand.)
