A popular ship in my fandom…

(Anonymous) 2015-01-25 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Is a Minor/Adult ship.

So, so yeah. One of the most popular ships in my current fandom is a minor/adult ship (and by 'minor' I mean teenager). I ship it too- though I usually avoid fanfics or fanart where the minor isn't aged up. But there is a very loud voice in the fandom that's vehemently against the entire concept of the ship.

Do you think those sorts of ships are inherently wrong?

No, because Minor/Adult could mean 17/19.

You'll have to be more specific than this.

OP-

okay... the minor, as said, a teenager- and the adult is a few hundreds of years old and looks somewhere in his twenties.

Better?

So like Edward/Bella, a hugely popular ship in a huge fandom full of all sorts of people young and old?

I think you'll find the answer is overwhelmingly "no"

OP -

I'm not familiar with twilight (and the ship is no canon) but in the fandom most characters are either teenagers or hundreds of years old.

The thing is- why isn't it wrong? There are people who ship them as their canon ages and I think it's a little creepy. So what difference does a couple of years make if there is still such a huge gap between them?

(DA) The fact that it's fictional makes the difference for most people, I guess.

Age gaps aren't wrong, manipulation and taking advantage of the younger partner are.

There are plenty of couples with huge age gaps between them that love each other deeply and respect each other and have an amazing relationship.

So, like Buffy/Angel?

DA: I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with big age differences. Whether it's a 16 year old and a 30 year old or a 17 year old and a 500 year old. Summer/Winter relationships are a thing in real life that work very well for some people too. Greater age can mean greater experience in some ways, so there will be some imbalance, but younger partners have plenty to contribute in the relationship.

I personally find these kinds of couples fascinating. Of course it will also depend on how they're written. If they love and respect each other and work hard to hash out the issues that come with the age difference, perfect. If the older one dominates the relationship because their partner is portrayed as too young and innocent to know this, that or the other thing, no.

sixteen and a thirty year old? That's extremely skeevy to me personally. Like an adult taking advantage of a child for sexual gratification.

AYRT: I was mostly using it for examples sake as 16 is a pretty common age of consent. Though I have seen a similar gap work for one pairing, I usually go with pairings where one character is 100's of years old: but as I mentioned, the couple would need to love and respect each other and be actively acknowledging and working through the age gap issues for me to read fic about it. If there was anything close to the older partner taking advantage of their partner or fetishizing the younger one's age I would back-button immediately. Also, there are some people/characters that are just more mature by 16 who do better with older partners.

So like Doctor/Rose in which the age gap was first 19/900 (looks 40ish), and then 20/901(looks 30ish?)?

No, because it depends on the ages of the characters you're talking about.

OP - I specified the ages above.

No. I don't think they're wrong.

It's fiction. (If it's RPF adult/minor I'd say it'd be 10000% wrong though)

And this is coming from someone who HATES adult/teen ships and it squicks me out.

For god's sake, i'ts shipping. No shipping of fictional characters can be wrong. Don't let other people policing your romantic/sexual fantasies.

Depends on the age of the minor. If the minor is pre-pubescent or a young teenager 13-15, I think it's really creepy. I've probably read fic with a 15 year old and an adult when I was 15-16 myself, but as an adult I just can't. 16-18 I don't mind as much because those ages are either close to of age or of age in other countries. It can still be creepy though, depending on how the relationship is portrayed.

I don't think they are inherently wrong, though they push it with under 15 yr olds, but they can be creepy due to the power imbalance.

Do you think those sorts of ships are inherently wrong?

In your sample, where one is a teenager and the other is obviously some kind of supernatural being? No, not at all. If the ship had a teenager and someone in their fifties, for example? Hell yes something is wrong. That second sort of ship could still be handled well, too, so mainly I'm just looking at it from a RL perspective. There is no real life equivalent to a five hundred year old vampire.

Inherently wrong irl maybe. In fiction, no. People can get creepy about it, but just shipping it isn't wrong.

And I have no problem with age difference ships that age up the young member in fanfic.

No, because it's fiction.

Eh, yeah they can be kinda dirty. That's why people like them so much. It is safer to ship fictional characters than to encourage this kind of behavior in real life, which could not only be illegal but damaging to the younger individual. I am guilty of shipping my own Minor/Adult pairs though it is usually in conjunction with a human/nonhuman character where age is a bit more ambiguous.

Is it either Sesshoumaru/Jago me or Kakashi/Sakura?

A lot of why I like those pairs is due to the environment they are in. Sakura may be in her teens, but she lives in a world where you grow up quick. Plus she comes out feeling far more mature than the boys (ignoring the stupid Sasuke crap anyway), so putting her with Kakashi feels more organic than with any of the boys.

Kagome gets on with most everyone except Naraku, plus Sesshoumaru goes through character growth and it's fun to see authors play with that and make it work between them.

In short I like them so long as the younger one is of age and it's handled well. And nay sayers can jump off a bridge.
