In some of my fandoms threesomes are a peaceful way for some to deal with pairing wars. Like if you have characters A, B , and C and two popular pairings are AB and AC, then some people will just throw them all together so no one gets left out.

Other times people just like the dynamics between three characters, especially if the three are close together that you can't imagine them without the others.

Which is the most patronizing, passive-aggressive reason for an OT3 to exist at all.
